Artist's Comments

We met this mare last year in Normandy, grazing on a large meagre meadow with other horses, but staying apart from the rest.
When we approached the fence, the other horses bit her off. The only way of showing some kindness to her was splitting up and at least temporarily be able to find a place among the thorns where we could say some nice words to her and give her some of the fresh green grass that did not grow in their meadow, but at the side of little country-road.
She grave us the impression of a great, yet suffering gentleness.

Oh I could cry. How sad.

What a sad story. The horse must feel very lonely.
You know... we hear many sad stories about horses. We always wonder how it's possible to hurt them as much as it happens. (It's really an everlasting subject....)

Beautiful shot and sad story.. She looks suffering indeed.. is a complicated thing, the relationships between horses? Never imagined..

Lovely picture and sad story. I have learned just in the last couple of years that indeed horses can be dreadful to each other, and that this treatment of one horse by the herd is by no means uncommon.
